The great thing about the Champions Tour is, it offers pro golfers who were not able to compete on the regular PGA tour, another chance. And that’s all Tucsonan Brian Kontak is asking for.
Many of you may remember the name as a past winner of the Golf Channel’s Big Break, or the guy who, once he heard that Annika Sorenstam was going to play in a men’s tournament, asked if he could play in a women’s tournament.
Kontak was more, though, than a novelty act. He had game. He won the Order of Merit on the Canadian Tour and twice won the Southern Arizona Open.
Now, almost 49 years old…Kontak has his sights set on the Champions Tour. A member of the Randolph Men’s Club, Kontak regularly shoots in the low 60’s during club events…and is trying to play his way back into tournament shape for Q-School
Last year, only a handful of golfers moved to the tour from Q-School and one of them, Shane Bertch, won a tournament his first month from qualifying. Kontak would like to do the same.
He was on The Golf Arizona Show recently and said he has played with dozens of Champion’s Tour golfers and has had good success against them in the past. He says, once he gets his mind and body into shape, there is no reason to think he can’t do it again.
