Having recently turned 50, Jim Furyk is having his way with the Champions Tour. The 3rd all time money winner on the PGA tour, is chalking up more of the same on the Champions circuit…winning the first two events he entered after he became eligible.  He hopes to win a third at the upcoming Cologuard Classic in Tucson at Tucson National (Feb 26-28)…a course that he knows well from his college golf days at the University of Arizona. While at the U of A, Furyk was a 2 time All American and led the team to its only Men’s NCAA championship in 1992.

Furyk has been splitting his time between the PGA and Champions Tour of late, this week he’s out at the LA Open for the final PGA west-coast swing event. He hasn’t had the results on the PGA tour that he had a few years back and plans to spend a lot more time at Champions Tour events. He told the media during a recent Zoom interview, that he’s hampered by his lack of length on the PGA tour. He says, too often he has 5 iron to a green that a younger player would be hitting 8 to.  He added that Champions Tour events are typically 400-500 yards shorter so he gets to be one of the longer hitters, while still taking advantage of his legendary accuracy and putting talent.

The University of Arizona Wildcats justified their lofty national ranking this week, winning their second 12 team tournament in as many tries. The Cats needed an up and down for par from Trevor Werbylo to finish tied for the top spot with North Carolina. Werbylo also finished in a tie for first in the individual results. The 4th ranked Cats finished ahead of the number 2 ranked Arizona State Sun Devils, who finished 4th.
