The Randolph Golf Complex is changing things up a little this fall. With record play since the Covid 19 pandemic, the course has been able to steer some money into a few subtle improvements. The driving range has a much-needed improvement. Driving range mats have arrived. The mats are meant to give the overstressed grass hitting areas a much-needed break. For those who beat balls at Randolph…it’s never easy finding some good grass to hit off. In addition, the course replaced most of its worn-out balls with new Callaway practice balls.
And with overseeding on the way…Randolph is taking a different route. For the north course…the City of Tucson has decided to not overseed the fairways, in order to protect the Bermuda grass. They will instead spray the fairways with green paint designed for golf courses, and they will just overseed the tees and green complexes. The move is expected to save money on seed and water. Randolph will close down October 26th and reopen November 7th. Dell Urich, in the meantime will receive the complete overseeding treatment…fairways, tees and green complexes. The south course at Randolph will shut down Monday October 12th and reopen October 24th.
A few more tidbits…the two courses at the Randolph Golf Complex have increased the gap between tee times from 9 to 10 minutes. It’s being done to try to ensure that all of the groups have enough golf carts. Since the Covid 19 rules went into effect, it’s not uncommon to see 4 carts in one group…and the course simply does not have a big enough supply to let everyone have one on a busy day. The course has actually blocked off a 30-45 minute period late in the morning due to the shortage. You can only get out on the course during that time if you want to walk….You’ll notice far fewer trees on the two courses. Age and weather has taken its toll on a number of prominent trees that lined the fairway. If you haven’t made it to either of the two courses of late…it’s noticeable…The OB bonus program has taken effect on City courses…instead of receiving free rounds after a certain amount of play…the new plan rewards golfers with cash to take off the price of rounds once they get enough points.
