Most serious golfers have a dream about winning a meaningful tournament. One where your name is announced on the first tee, and you’re handed one of those big checks after you sink the winning putt. Even if you’re not a pro, it could happen to you. It’s being called the Mobetta Tour. The name comes from products a posse of rodeo promoters came up with to pitch to rodeo fans. And John Daly is the face and voice behind the new tour.

Daly was a recent guest on The Golf Arizona Show (Saturdays from 8-9 am on ESPN/Tucson) and said he kept hearing from folks during pro-ams that it would be fun to play these kind of events for money. So, he and some buddies from the rodeo world came up with a new tour, meant for both club pro’s and amateurs, men and women with prize money for the top finishers. The first 8 events are in Arizona…with Tubac Golf Resort hosting the first event of the year, January 3rd.

The event is handicapped, with the Open Division .9 and better, the A Division will be 1.0 to 3.9, B Divison is 4.0 to 6.9 and the C Division is 7 and above. If you want to maintain your amateur status, you can donate the money to Daly’s non-profit, Heart of a Lion, or a non-profit of your choice. Daly says he’s going to be tough on sandbaggers. if you shoot low enough in an event where your score falls into a higher division, you’ll get placed in that division the next time you sign up. You’re playing for points as well as money (think Fed Ex points) and if you are one of the leaders at the end of the year you can play in the Tour Championship in Las Vegas…where the winner of each division will receive $15,000.
