Some would say he’s the most famous caddie in the world. Since Caddyshack became a hit movie in 1980, millions of movie watchers got to know Danny Noonan as the affable, diligent, and earnest caddy from the cult film classic. And now, 40 years later…he wants to do it again.
Noonan, known to his family as Michael O’Keefe, has put out the word that he wants to carry someone’s bag for the upcoming US Open at Winged Foot on Long Island. Even though his acting career has been steady and fulfilling, O’Keefe says he would be more helpful and knowledgable than some might think.
Growing up on Long Island, O’Keefe spent much of his youth caddying at Winged Foot…so he knows the course. Since then, his brother became President of the club, so he was often included in events at the course throughout the years.
But why now, at 65? He was recently on The Golf Arizona Show and said, “Why not, I’m not getting any younger.” He says he stays fit by chasing around his 7 year old son and doing various forms of yoga-like exercises.
He says the United States Golf Association brass has signed off on his project…he says if he gets to loop for a golfer, he’ll contribute his stipend to one of the USGA’s charities. Then he added, “Seriously, what does my future boss have to lose? He’ll most likely miss the cut anyway, but, at least, it would be a week that he’d never forget.”
