Brent Newcomb Captures 2013 Southern Chapter PGA Championship at Dell Urich Golf Course in Tucson, AZ.
By Rick Price, PGA
After an opening round 71 on the par 70 Dell Urich golf course and 8 shots off the lead set by Kevin Crawley’s 63 from La Paloma CC, Newcomb was wondering if he was going to even make a check. Well, after posting his own 2nd round score of 63 and only 2 shots out of the lead, he quickly changed his mindset. Newcomb followed up his career best round with a final round 65 to force a three man play-off with Skyline CC professional Don Littrell posting 65-68-66=199 and Brandon Smith from Ventana Canyon shooting rounds of 67-66-66=199.
The first play-off hole continued the drama of who was going to win with Newcomb hitting his approach to within six feet of the hole for birdie to seemingly win the Championship. However, Littrell would have something say about that. Smith was first to play chipping from about 30 feet, just off the green. As soon as he hit it, he thought he made it, but with slightly to much speed the ball hit the back of the hole and popped out, having to settle for a par. Littrell was next to play with a birdie putt from 20 feet to eliminate Smith and putt the presser back on Newcomb and he calmly rolled it for his birdie. Newcomb now knowing his fate stepped up and sunk his birdie putt to force another play-off hole between himself and Littrell as Smith was eliminated.
Newcomb was first to play hitting it to within 10 feet on the 213 yard par 3. Littrell pulls his approach shot just left of the green, knowing that he needs to give his chip shot a chance to go in to force another hole, ran it 8 feet past the hole. Newcomb now having a chance to win the Championship outright rolls his putt in the dead center of the hole before losing its speed coming up just short and settling for a par. Littrell having a chance to extend the play-off if he can salvage his par putt catches the right corner of the hole and spinning out. Brent Newcomb captures the title as 2013 Southern Chapter Championship defeating Don Littrell and Brandon Smith in a two hole play-off.
